When to Send Save the Dates

What are Save the Dates?

The newest addition to the wedding paper trousseau is the “Save the Date” card. These cards recognize the busy schedule of today’s brides and grooms and their guests. They are designed to ask guests to “reserve” important dates well in advance of the official invitation that will follow later.

When Should You Send Save the Dates?

Modern etiquette suggests that these cards be sent out no earlier than about 6 months before the planned wedding date. The best guideline is the make sure that there is at least one month between when the guests received the “save” cards and the invitation itself. And if there is any question about the details of the planned wedding and the size of the guest list, wait before you send.

If you are planning a destination wedding, it is expected that you will let potential guests know at least 6 months before the actual wedding if you expect them to travel to your ceremony and celebration.

Save the Date vs Invitation

It is important to understand that the receiver of your Save the Date card will perceive this card as a “pre” invitation. You must be sure that the person to whom this card is sent will also be on the final list of those invited to the actual ceremony and reception. If you send out the date card a year in advance and discover later during the wedding planning process that the guest list must be curtailed, you don’t want to be faced with the issue of uninviting people. That’s why a timeline is important!
