What Is an Honorary Bridesmaid? 3 Things You Should Know

Run sheet, shot list, escort cards, invitation suite—these are just a few terms that can be understandably confusing if you're not familiar with weddings. It's not uncommon for brides and grooms to also get wedding party terms confused, especially when they must keep track of so many people and titles.

While the term bridesmaid seems straightforward—someone who accompanies the bride—did you know that there are different types of bridesmaids, like honorary and matron? Don't worry. You're not alone if you didn't. This article will guide you through what an honorary bridesmaid is and isn't, and some things you should know about this special role, to help unravel the concept.

What Is an Honorary Bridesmaid?

An honorary bridesmaid is a special person in your life that you want to include in your wedding festivities but, for various reasons, can't fully participate in the traditional bridesmaid duties. Maybe she lives far away, has a busy schedule, or maybe there are already too many bridesmaids. Whatever the case may be, this role is a lovely way to acknowledge her importance in your life without the full commitment of a typical bridesmaid role.

The honorary bridesmaid receives an invitation to all the wedding events, she can wear the bridesmaid dress, and she's definitely in the wedding photos! However, the bridal party does not expect her to help plan the bridal shower or bachelorette party unless she can or wants to.

What's the Difference Between an Honorary Bridesmaid and Other Bridesmaids?

Now that you know what an honorary bridesmaid is, the real question is, what's the difference between honorary and other bridesmaids? What things should you know about these roles? While the honorary and traditional bridesmaid are both precious parts of the bridal party, their roles are a bit different. Traditional bridesmaids are usually responsible for planning pre-wedding events, like the bridal shower and bachelorette party.

The bridal party also expects them to assist with wedding preparations, be it addressing invitations or choosing the bridesmaid dresses. On the wedding day, they're by the bride's side, offering moral support and ensuring everything goes smoothly. A matron and maid of honor are both head bridesmaids, but the matron of honor typically has a matrimonial partner.

On the other hand, an honorary bridesmaid doesn't have the above responsibilities. Her role is more about participation than planning. She's there to celebrate with the bride rather than sort out the details like the other bridesmaids.

Why Would You Have an Honorary Bridesmaid?

Having an honorary bridesmaid is a lovely way to include someone dear to you in your wedding. Maybe they're your best friend from childhood who now lives overseas and can't commit to all the pre-wedding events. Or maybe they can't dedicate time to plan the bachelorette party due to their work schedule or childcare needs.

Having them as an honorary bridesmaid allows you to honor their special place in your life while respecting their circumstances. It's also a great solution when you have too many important people in your life and can't possibly have them all as traditional bridesmaids.
