How to Write a Wedding Thank You Card

thank you note

The wedding was amazing and your honeymoon was special. Now you’re home and facing a mountain of thank you notes that must be written for all the lovely and thoughtful gifts you received for your wedding. Here are some tips for writing a sincere thank you for your wedding gifts.

How to Write a Thank You for Wedding Gifts

  • If you haven’t ordered thank you notes to match the general paper and design you’ve chosen for your wedding, make sure you invest in quality notepaper that reflects your personality.
  • Add your initials or new name(s) to your cards
  • Tailor each note to the relationship you have with the person receiving it. What you write to your boss will be quite different from what you write to your favorite aunt.
  • Be as specific as possible about each gift. Avoid generalities like “thank you for the lovely gift” and make each gift important by stating how you plan to use it.
  • Write as you would speak – sincerely and spontaneously.
  • Ask yourself if you received this note, would you consider it interesting and sincere? If the answer is no, start over!
  • If you are writing to thank the giver for a gift of money, try to refer to the item you bought or how you plan to use the money. Cash gifts are considered appropriate – even welcome – but it’s nice to share with the giver your plans for it.
  • if you are writing a thank you note for a duplicate gift, write each person’s note as though the present he or she sent was the only one received.
  • All gifts should be acknowledged within two to three months of the wedding.
