There is little doubt that you will ever wear a gown as unique as the one you’ll choose to be married in. Fabrics, trims, silhouettes, necklines and styles can be combined in a myriad of design possibilities. Two of the most important elements of the gown you choose will be the length of the skirt and the kind of train the gown shows.

Types of Wedding Dress Lengths

  • Street Length Dress – A street length dress has a hem that just covers the knees.
  • Intermission Lenth Dress – An intermission length refers to a hem that falls slightly below the knees or midway between the knees and the ankles. The intermission length may also graduate to a floor length in the back.
  • Short Dresses – Some designers have begun to show skirts shorter than knee length but it takes a good pair of legs to show this design well.
  • Ballet Length Dress – Ballet length refers to a hem that swirls at the ankles.
  • Floor Length Dress – A floor length dress does what the name describes- it skirts the floor at a perfect length for walking and dancing.

Types of Wedding Dress Trains

  • Cathedral Train – If you grew up loving the scene of Julie Andrews walking down the aisle of the cathedral in The Sound of Music, you will want a cathedral train. Cathedral trains extend two and one-half yards from the waist, and some extended cathedral trains extend three yards from the waistline. As you might have guessed, there is a correlation between train length and degree of formality of the wedding.
  • Sweep Train – A sweep train, as the name implies, barely sweeps the floor.
  • Court Train – A court train extends about one foot longer than the sweep train.
  • Chapel Train – A chapel train extends about one and one-third yards from the waist.
